qm-win2k3-01 not responding

Mornings in Eastern Standard Time are quiet times around Mozilla, usually. So I took this as an opportunity to reboot qm-win2k3-01, everyone’s favorite lovable robot character.

There were a bunch of stuck processes on the machine when I logged into it. This is not uncommon, although killing them this morning seemed to be slower than usual.

After managing to get the machine to reboot through a combination of windows controls and the shutdown.exe command, attempts to login have been… frustrating. I get a blue desktop background when logging in as Buildbot, but no Windows controls — no task bar, Start button, desktop icons. Logging in as Administrator gets me what I need, but the machine still feels slow.

This was frustrating. I ended up looking at some of the included HP diagnostics tools (everything checked-out). In the end, leaving the Admin user logged in while reconnecting through Remote Desktop to the Buildbot user seemed to bring it up. Thanks to justdave and NeilAway for troubleshooting ideas and supportive noises.

If the machine disappears this weekend, you’ve got qm-winxp01 as a backup. I’ll be at a barbeque in New Jersey.

“Windows controls — no task bar, Start button, desktop icons.”

Sounds like no Explorer. Did you try Ctrl-Alt-Del > Task Manager, File > New Task > “explorer”? That works on WinXP after killing the Explorer.

yup. Ctrl-alt-del (and ctrl-alt-end) weren’t bringing up anything.
