The Fellowship of the Marble of Doom October 20th, 2007
I saw this mentioned on The Unofficial Apple Web Log and had to post it here: The Fellowship of the Marble of Doom

while not exactly scientific, it does paint a somewhat disturbing picture while showing off a fairly hypnotic graphic.
Well, I just wanted to reiterate that we’re not just sitting on our laurels over here. Robert Sayre posted a great run-down on some of the tests we’re currently hosting and a great percentage of them are running on top of his mochitest harness or variations thereon.
In the performance arena, Alice Nodelman’s Talos has been providing us with a large set of a data on a daily basis tracking our performance progress on Minefield. The performance kit isn’t complete yet though and she’s integrating other timing tests for Txul, Tdhtml and Tsvg among other things. Waiting in the wings, we may be able to pick up some other random bits of instrumentation to measure application performance. Ultimately, what I’d like to see this evolve into is a robust benchmarking toolkit for measuring browser performance. Full stop. Yes, that means the whole browser.
And you can help! Alice recently finished up some documentation on running Standalone Talos with testing and setup help from Johnath Nightingale. The current state requires a user to go through the pain of gathering a pageset before it can be useful. This is less than ideal and we’d really like to see a set of user-generated pages that could be licensed and downloadable as part of this toolkit. It would make the setup process just that much easier for the end-user. Other ways you can help is by providing performance measuring features. Measuring particular areas of browser performance is extremely helpful and bundling these as a bit of chrome or as an extension with an easy way to invoke them would be a great way to get them included in our hourly performance tests. Scrolling, tab-switching, bookmarking, you name it. If the browser can do it, we should be able to measure how fast it happens. And then make it better.

Unittest Outage on October 17, 2007 October 15th, 2007
I mentioned this in the meeting today and in moz.dev.planning, but just in case you missed it, we’re planning a 3 hour outage of the Firefox tree on Wednesday, October 17th, 2007 from 6-9am PDT. We need to clone an image of the buildbot unittest master and IT needs some time to do that.
If this causes any serious problems, please let us know.
