With one in place, we'd have to potentially update 2 or more separate code paths on every change. Security vulnerabilities might require patching in multiple locations. And then, down the road if we ever wanted to remove a compatibility layer, we'd run into the whole problem of people refusing to update all over again. It's sad, but this is the price of progress. As for Sage, there are some alternatives. <a href="https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/424" rel="nofollow">Wizz RSS news reader</a>, came up on a search for RSS.
