awesome tutorial! i just recently started using firebug, having been a fan of the web developer add-on for years and boy is my life so much more excellent now. thanks for all the detailed info, i look forward to using more of firebug’s functionality.

Thanks Rob. That was a very useful quick overview. I agree with Vlad that you did an exemplary job of packing in a lot of info in a few minutes. I hadn’t noticed the expanded JavaScript console until you mentioned it!

Though I mainly use firebug for modifying and testing wordpress templates through css, I found this video to be very informative even given my lack of php knowledge. Relevant new information was the use of the “net” panel to test the load time of all the individual files including image files (this was always disabled so i never bothered with it), and scrolling through the source code with the keypad. Thank you.

rudeness aside, Dave has posted the second comment about not hearing commentary in the downloaded video. I’ve tested this in both VLC 1.0.2+ and Quicktime with the XiphQT components and it plays fine without warnings.

Not to mention Firefox on all three supported platforms.

Check your installed codecs.

What a complete waste of time. You have to download the video to see it in a proper resolution, then there’s no commentary. Useless.

It is really hard to come up with a dense yet understandable demo. My take on that was for FireBug 1.3 – a 10 minute / 74 MB demo available at http://didenko.com/files/firebug_demo.mp4. The feedback was that the first half is too basic for advanced users and the second half is too advanced for beginner users. Rob’s demo gracefully packs highlights in 6 minutes – kudos!

@gerv, I was using Firebug 1.5b8.

@Rowno, I thought that’s what I was doing? Maybe you’re suggesting I go over each of the panels in some detail with descriptions of what they’re intended to be used for? With a self-imposed time-limit of 5 minutes, I didn’t even have time to cover the features I did talk about so it was pretty tight. Maybe a 20 minute version which discusses each panel in detail would be useful.
