Firebug 1.4.0b1 Limited Release on AMO

Today we’ve pushed Firebug 1.4.0b1 (same as 1.4.0a31) to addons.mozilla.org. Currently, we’ve only turned it on for users of 3.5b4 and later, but this version is fully-compatible with Firefox 3.0 as well. Users of Firefox 3.0 who want to try out Firebug 1.4 should download it from getfirebug.com/releases/firebug/1.4 or disable version checking on AMO. When [...]

Tabs on Top

Curtis Bartley landed his “Tabs on Top” patch last week and John Barton pushed out a new alpha version, number 1.4a17. You can get it in the usual places on getfirebug.com/releases/firebug/1.4. The debug version is next door.
We think this makes more sense. Tabs are top-level objects and the toolbars change depending on which tab you [...]

FireUnit – the early years

One of our goals for moving forward with Firebug is to build a system to run automated unit tests for it. Currently, Firebug is modified, packaged and then tested by a small (but enthusiastic!) group of developers. When changes are made to the codebase, the area under development might be tested by the developer, but [...]

Weekly Firebug Status Meeting, Sept 30, 2008

month of notes
Just wanted to post a quick run-down from the weekly firebug meeting to present some status and plans for the near future. You can read the full meeting notes in all their bulletized glory on wiki.mo.
This week, we’ll be pushing out a Firebug 1.3 alpha 3 to test some of the recent changes [...]

Cannot connect after upgrading Firefox, a story

I’m going to take a break from talking about Firebug (which is awesome) this afternoon to relay an interesting experience I had. Something a little out-of-the-ordinary that was kind of fun and can hopefully be useful to others should they find themselves in the same situation.
It’s Friday afternoon and I’m sitting at my desk, a [...]

Building Chromebug

This week was a pretty incredible week for web stuff. The Labs people kicked off their Ubiquity prototype, letting the world get a taste for some of what will be possible through natural language processing and the browser. I also discovered a new feed reading add-on for Firefox called Feedly which does some very cool [...]

WikifyTabs

This weekend I took a bit of time out of my busy schedule of barbecuing and hiking among the rocks to write a little extension. A visiting friend asked if there was an easy way to get a list of the currently open tabs to enter in a wiki page. I tried various “bookmark all [...]

Fear and Loathing in Whistler

Day 4. It’s another gloomy day out there. I was awakened by the sound of a generator outside my window and an ill-sounding alarm buzzer coming from the room safe as the power drained out of it, locking my documents inside. There’s no power in the room. The hotel is running on emergency power after [...]

Add-ons I can’t roll without

Deb posted an excellent run-down the other day about 20 top-notch add-ons ready for Firefox 3. I thought I’d do a quick write-up about a few of the add-ons I find invaluable too (and more-or-less ready for Firefox 3.0). Note that there may be some overlap here and that some of these add-ons are considered [...]

HOWTO: Unit testing Linux

Mozilla’s evangelist and resident all-around-good-guy Chris Blizzard wrote an excellent piece yesterday on the dangers of hand-picking patches in a linux distribution, at least as they pertain to Mozilla and Firefox. I don’t need to say more on that as he covers it pretty well. I will just say that it’s a hard problem and [...]
